Life Coaching for Fathers - Do I Need a Life Coach?

By , About.com Guide

If you are wondering whether you need a life or personal coach, you should consider these questions?

Am I going through a major transition in life? If you are going through divorce, loss of a spouse, major employment change or other significant transition, you might consider hiring a personal coach. The coaching process tends to help you think more rationally and objectively about how these kinds of transitions will effect your life.

Am I losing my edge? Sometimes we hit a point in life where we feel we are losing our competitive edge. Maybe we're just tired or have lost focus. A relationship with a personal or life coach can help you get back on track, find your motivation and regain focus. With a coach's mentoring and accountability functions, he or she can help you regain some of the lost momentum.

Am I struggling with family and relationship issues? Maybe you are struggling with a marriage or relationship with a significant other. Perhaps your children are rebellious or in long-term trouble. While a life coach is not a family therapist, he or she can bring perspective and ideas for action that can help overcome these personal struggles.

Am I worried about my lifestyle? Have you become more sedentary and maybe put on a few pounds? Are you struggling with addictive behaviors like drugs, alcohol or pornography? Are you feeling down and discouraged frequently? Then perhaps a coaching and mentoring relationship could make a difference in your direction.

Am I open to constructive feedback and ready for change? If you are too sensitive and not feeling the need to change your life, then working with a personal and life coach may not be for you. There is real power in working with a skilled and well-trained life coach and if you are not ready for that resource in your life yet, you may want to wait until you are. A good coach challenges your life assumptions and practices and will help you see things differently. If you are enjoying the ruts in your life, wait until you are really ready to climb out before finding a coach.
