Five famous television fathers were nominated for the 2013 Readers' Choice Awards. Check out these dads - four currently appearing on television and one classic from the past - and then cast your vote for your favorite television dad.
1. Tom Selleck - Frank Reagan in Blue Bloods
Blue Bloods is a drama about a multi-generational family of cops dedicated to New York City law enforcement. Frank Reagan is the New York Police Commissioner and heads both the police force and the Reagan brood. Caring, full of common sense and amazingly loyal, Frank Reagan (as played by Tom Selleck) is still connected to his adult kids, who work in the NYPD and in the District Attorney's Office.
2. Nathan Fillion - Richard Castle - in Castle
Castle on ABC television is a crime drama about a mystery novelist who inadvertently connects with the New York Police Department and works with a beautiful detective to solve unsolvable crimes. Nathan Fillion plays Richard Castle, the title character. Castle also has a daughter, Alexis, with whom he has a special relationship. She is pretty self-absorbed, but he still loves her and works well with her teenaged idiosyncrasies.
3. Ty Burrell - Phil Dunphy - in Modern Family
Phil Dunphy, played by Ty Burrell, is seen by many as a nearly model father in the series Modern Family. He is a good provider and committed to his work, but he maintains a good sense of humor and keeps his kids in line. He is also just a little goofy and seems to embarrass himself frequently, which makes him even more endearing.
4. Bill Cosby - Cliff Huxtable - The Cosby Show
Frequently on the top television fathers of all time lists, Heathcliff Huxtable from The Cosby Show from the mid to late 1980's. Bill Cosby played obstetrician Dr. Huxtable, married to an attorney and raising an upper middle class family. We all watched the children grow up over the multiple seasons of The Costy Show and enjoyed Cliff's quick wit, colorful sweaters and his strong, "tough love" role as the patriarch of the Huxtable clan.
5. Corbin Bernsen - Henry Spencer - Psych
Henry Spencer is the grizzled former Santa Barbara police officer who is the father of Shawn Spencer, the title character "police department psychic" in Psych on the USA Network. Certainly one of the best written comedies on television today, Psych offers veteran actor Corbin Bernsen an opportunity for a great role. In the series plot, Shawn Spencer was taught as a boy amazing perception skills by his dad, and he has parlayed those skills as a young adult to a contract as a psychic solving mysteries for the Santa Barbara P.D. Henry's role is to keep Shawn grounded and to help him develop, even at this late date, some responsibility for his life. While Shawn frequently resents his dad, Henry continues to be a father to his grown but immature son.
