Hannah Storm has always been one of my favorite sportscasters. I appreciate her human touch and her vast knowledge of sports. Having been a close observer of the 2002 Winter Olympics (living in a venue city at the time), I was especially impressed with her daytime hosting role in the Winter Games and her ability to engage her viewers in the Games.
Now Hannah has authored an important book for fathers of daughters of all ages.
Go Girl! Raising Healthy, Confident and Successful Girls through Sports is the resource for dads who have sports-minded daughters. It is a must read for those who want to make sports a positive experience for their girls.
Hannah talks in detail in the book about the importance of sports in a girl's life, from the physical, mental and emotional sides. I could relate to many of her conclusions from the lives and activities of my own two daughters.
One of my favorite parts of the book deals with sports and its applicability at different stages of a girl's life. Hannah approaches these issues sensibly and offers good advice to dads who wonder about how early their daughters should participate in competitive or solo sports. Her chapter on teaching the values of sportsmanship was also excellent and offered practical tips for teaching how to be good sports by both precept and example.
For me, one of the best parts of the book (worth the price alone) is her chapters on "Sports 101." Here she provides the basics of rules and successful play for sports activities including the common (softball, soccer and volleyball) to the less well known including field hockey, lacrosse and rugby. These chapters have valuable insights into the various sports, how they are played successfully, and gives you enough knowledge to talk intelligently with your daughter (or son for that matter) who is involved.
I can recommend Go Girl! without hesitation as an important addition to the parenting library of any dad whose daughters are or should be involved in sports.
