Planning the Summer Road Trip
Trip Planning Resources

By Wayne Parker, About.com

Rand McNally Trip Planner This site is one of the best on the web for planning a road trip. Entering your departure base and your destination will result in a map with suggestions of things to do along the way. When you are finished, you can print a trip guide with maps, mileage and other information about the trip.

SeeAmerica.org If traveling by scenic byways is something of interest, SeeAmerica.org has a great site for planning a trip along the back roads. You can find pictures of the various national scenic byways and go through a trip planning process that takes you to some of these beautiful routes.

Roadfood.com If you are interested in eating at some of America's best roadside restaurants, this site is for you. Here you can find reviews of restaurants all over the US, searchable by type of cuisine and location. And after you eat at one of these spots, you can enter your own review.

Road Watch AmericaOne of the hazards of road trips is road construction. Slow downs, detours, and lots of orange barrels can confuse the sturdiest road warriors. At Road Watch America, you can find out whether you are likely to encounter road work on your trip. It also offers up to date status on road conditions in case of inclement weather.

Free Trip Trip Planner I really like this site. At Free Trip, you can enter your points of origin and destination, along with other information you want to see like points of interest, lodging by cost, campgrounds, etc. and then print out a map and driving directions with all of the information you asked for. This is a very helpful site for planning your family trip.

Conclusion

Having a successful family road trip depends to a large extent on the time you are willing to invest in planning. These tips and planning resources will go a long way to helping you plan the trip and to building great family memories.
