What About Filtering?
Your Family and the Internet

By Wayne Parker, About.com

There are three basic types of filtering for Internet sites available to parents and children. First, the filtering can occur at the source through the Internet Service Provider (ISP). There are many ISP’s which offer some level of filtering. America Online and MSN offer parental controls on the user’s account structure which can work effectively. Other ISP:’s with content filtering include Catholicfamilies.net, x`the Christian Living Network, Cleanweb, Clearsail, Integrity Online, Mstar, and Internet4Families.

Second, a software filter can be installed and controlled on your own PC. The software intercepts and blocks websites that don’t comply with the filtering system. Some of the best choices include Cybersitter, Cyberpatrol, Kidsafe Explorer, , NetNanny, We-Blocker and WebGuardian. Most of these programs allow parents to turn off controls when they want them off and are managed by a parent’s own username and password.

Finally, parents can opt for an intermediary between the ISP and the PC that routes all content through a third party’s server, which intercepts inappropriate content. Some of the best of these services include American Family Online, WiseChoice, and Family Click.

No filtering system is foolproof—even the best filters will not eliminate 100% of all objectionable content. But filtering is a good alternative to keeping objectionable or inappropriate sites off your home PC.
