Most of my readers know that I am a big proponent of fathers reading with their children and helping them learn to love to read. I know it can be tough when we have so many other activities to compete with, but the results of a love of reading are worth the effort. Video games, television and sports are all good things for kids, but learning how to read well and developing a love for reading will serve your children well all their lives.
Just this week I was introduced to a new app for the iPod, iPhone and iPad that is just amazing and one of the best things I have seen for a parent who wants to instill the love of reading in his or her child. Kids' Book Finder helps parents access a database of over 26,000 children's titles that have either won a national or regional award or is an award-worthy book. The app allows a user to search the database based on title, author, genre, keyword or award program, or any combination thereof. The app will generate a list of books that match the criteria and for each book provide key information, a book synopsis and a link to purchase the book on Amazon. Or, a user can create a custom list that can be saved and then used to find the listed books at a library, bookstore or online book seller.
The app is currently only available for iOS, but the Android version is following shortly.
Read more about this excellent app, which can be purchased from the Apple App Store for $1.99. I am certain that any dad who loves reading and wants to help instill that same love in his kids will love this app.
