So often, it seems like we find professional athletes who take their family responsibilities so lightly. The prototypical lifestyle of a professional athlete living in the fast lane doesn't leave a lot of time or attention for children. But when there is a departure from the norm, it is refreshing and worth noting.
Dwyane Wade of the NBA's Miami Heat is just such a departure from the norm. D-Wade is a committed father. You may remember from a few years ago the very public custody battle he waged for his children and the classic case of parental alienation that ensued. Wade won his fight and his primary custody of his two boys Zaire and Zion.
His amazing life story has been shared in a new book A Father First - How My Life Became Bigger Than Basketball. I took the opportunity on a recent trip to read the book and I came away pretty impressed. When you consider Wade's childhood and the challenges he has overcome, his commitment to family and his embracing of values like responsibility are pretty amazing.
Check out my review of A Father First and then you need to buy or download the book and read it. You will be a better father for having taken the time to understand Dwyane Wade's journey and for reinforcing your own commitment to fatherhood.
