For New-Sport Athletes, High School Finishes 2nd

Thursday September 21, 2006
What a fascinating article in the New York Times. It profiles young athletes in sports like skateboarding and surfing that leave high school to pursue their careers in the sport. But a more interesting side note is the attitude of their parents (read: managers) about sport versus education. I know my kids were into more traditional sports like soccer, running and ballroom dance, but not at the sacrifice of their education. As a former teacher, and a guy whose family is heavily involved in education, I’m sure you can guess how I feel about this trend.

It’s getting more and more difficult for kids to be kids, anymore. School is only partly about education; the rest is learning how to…be. I simply don’t think it’s healthy for kids to grow up in these environments.
