Verizon Ad Raises Fathers' Ire
Thursday December 2, 2004
Have you seen the Verizon commercial on TV? A daughter is doing some research online and the dad who wants to help with her homework is portrayed as inept. Finally, the mother comes along and tells the dad to "Leave her alone" and sends him out to wash the dog. Well, some dads are outraged at how the father is portrayed, feeling (rightly so) that a commercial with the roles reversed would never have been made. If you feel similarly, you can visit radio commentator Glenn Sacks' website to find out how to lodge a complaint with Verizon. Its a chance to stand up for fatherhood!

Wow. Welcome to the world of content neutrality. It appears as if you’ve never heard that men and women carry different roles than they did a few hundred years ago. I love this commercial. I have no pity for other men who feel wronged by this advertisement.
The real reason why you are mad is because you know that if the commercial was shot with the roles reversed- there’s no way it would air. Your ignorance views it as unjust.
I see the ad as a great way to poke fun at the 21st century idealisms and household dominance. Surely I am not the only man who finds the hilarity of a bunch of whiny fathers at a Verizon ad? The women are rolling on the floor laughing at this “retaliation”, i’m sure. They have a right to.
And for the record, any father who’s attempted to help with homework just gets frustrated with it anyway, and I’m fantastic at washing our dog.
Wow Mike, talk about leaving your nuts at the door. I am glad you’re so happy with your training, your mother must be proud. I didn’t see the commercial but it is a phenomenon of our time to create the “dumb” husband character in a great many ads. You happened to mention my personal test in your metrosexual responce. If the roles were reversed by gender or race, and it would be obviously insulting, then don’t create the ad.
